Welcome to the Gwaii Animal Helpline Society (GAHS), a non-profit organization registered in British Columbia and situated in Haida Gwaii, the unceded territory of the Haida Nation. GAHS operates entirely through the dedication of volunteers. Our central mission is to promote compassionate care for abandoned, surrendered, injured, or neglected companion animals, providing the essential human assistance they require. Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning:
    • Actively participate in the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan.
    • Provide input on key goals, objectives, and initiatives.
  • Governance:
    • Attend regular board meetings and actively contribute to discussions and decision-making processes.
    • Ensure the organization operates following its bylaws and legal requirements.
  • Financial Oversight:
    • Review and approve budgets, financial reports, and significant financial transactions.
    • Work collaboratively with other board members to ensure sound fiscal management.
  • Fundraising and Resource Development:
    • Actively support and participate in fundraising efforts to secure resources for the organization.
    • Leverage personal and professional networks to identify and engage potential donors and sponsors.
  • Advocacy and Representation:
    • Advocate for the organization and its mission within the community.
    • Represent the organization at events, meetings, and other public forums.
  • Committee Participation:
    • Serve on committees as needed, contributing expertise and insights to specific focus areas (e.g., finance, fundraising, governance).
  • Networking and Partnerships:
    • Cultivate positive relationships with key stakeholders, partners, and community leaders.
    • Identify opportunities for collaboration and strategic partnerships.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for the organization’s mission and a commitment to its success.
  • Previous experience serving on boards or in leadership roles is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse team members.
  • Knowledge of the organization’s field and a willingness to stay informed about relevant issues.

Time Commitment:

  • Attend regular board meetings, on average, once per month. 
  • Participate in committee work and additional organizational events as needed.
  • Estimated time commitment depends on the role and level of time able to commit. We ask for a time commitment of 10 hours/month, minimum. 
  • Two Year Commitment
