Welcome to the Gwaii Animal Helpline Society (GAHS), a non-profit organization registered in British Columbia and situated in Haida Gwaii, the unceded territory of the Haida Nation. GAHS operates entirely through the dedication of volunteers. Our central mission is to promote compassionate care for abandoned, surrendered, injured, or neglected companion animals, providing the essential human assistance they require. Position Overview:
As an Animal Foster Volunteer with GAHS, you play a crucial role in providing temporary care and a loving environment for animals in need. Fostering is an enriching experience that directly contributes to our animals’ care, well-being and successful adoption. If you have a passion for animals and a willingness to make a difference, we invite you to join our dedicated team of foster volunteers.
GAHS supports Animal Foster Volunteers by providing:
- Food for the foster animal, and dishes if needed
- Litter, litter boxes if needed
- Bedding
- Leashes
- Toys
- Animal Carrier if available
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Provide Temporary Shelter:
- Offer a safe and nurturing environment for animals awaiting a permanent home.
- Ensure the physical and emotional well-being of the fostered animal.
- Daily Care:
- Feed, groom, and administer any required medications per veterinary direction.
- Monitor and report any changes in behaviour or health to the organization.
- Socialization:
- Interact with the foster animal to promote socialization and positive behaviours.
- Help animals adapt to a home environment, preparing them for their forever homes.
- Transportation:
- Assist with transportation to and from veterinary appointments or adoption events if needed.
- Communication:
- Maintain regular communication with the Foster Coordinator to provide updates on the animal’s progress.
- Attend scheduled check-ins or meetings as required.

Qualifications:
- Genuine love for animals and a commitment to their well-being.
- Ability to provide a stable and secure environment for foster animals.
- Ensure the health and well-being of resident animals—keep vaccinations up to date, spay or neuter, and plan introductions to animals within the foster home to minimize stress.
- Patience and compassion, especially when dealing with animals that may have experienced trauma or neglect.
- Willingness to follow organization guidelines and policies.
- Reliable transportation (if applicable).
