Adoption Process & Fees

How to Adopt

Fill out a cat or dog matching application and submit it online.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • The adoption process is handled by a designated volunteer who will do their best to respond within 24 hrours.
  • There may be more than one application for each animal.
  • Applicants are reviewed in the order they are received. There may be more than one perfect match and in that case, we may go in the order we received the application. If a perfect match comes up early, that person will be contacted and interviewed.
  • If you apply for a pet and are not contacted within 24 hours, it could mean the animal was placed with an earlier applicant or the adoption is pending. We will attempt to contact and interview you anyway, in case someone changes their mind or you could be interested in adopting in the future.
  • If you are applying for a particular animal, please be sure to indicate which animal you are interested in.
  • If you are applying in advance without a particular animal in mind, you will be contacted for an interview. Then watch the posts and send the name of the animal you are interested in when they come up on Facebook or our website.

If you are a match

  • The goal is to match the right family, lifestyle and expectations with the right animal as soon as possible.
  • We will connect you with the animal’s foster so you have the opportunity to meet. Because all our animals are fostered in private homes, only those who are a match are given an appointment to meet.
  • The meeting time will be agreeable to both you and the foster home but unless there are extenuating circumstances, it is expected to take place within a few days.
  •  The decision for the adoption should be made within one day of the home visit, that way we can continue to look for a match if necesary. We make every effort to send the animal to their new home as soon we can.

If you choose to proceed

  • You will be asked to fill out a one page adoption agreement. This form will include any medical treatments, vaccination date, parasite treatment date, and tattoo number.
  • Adoption fees or donations can be etransferred to gwaiianimalhelpline@gmail.com or paid on-line. Let us know if neither of these options work for you and we will arrange an alternative method for payment.
  • Once the agreement is signed and returned, we will notify the Haida Gwaii Animal Hospital the animal has been adopted.
  • The final step is for you to contact the Haida Gwaii Animal Hospital at 250-557-4468 to advise them you are the new owner so the animal’s medical file can be put under your name. This is especially important when the animal has an ID tattoo number, because if the animal should become lost, the ID number will be connected to your contact information.

Gwaii Animal Helpline Adoption Fees

Our Regular Adoption fee:

An ID tattoo is included as part of the adoption fee if it is done at the time of the spay/neuter surgery. GAHS also covers any immediate medical treatments the animal may require before going into their new home.

Exceptions to the Regular Adoption fees are:

  • 2 animals adopted at the same time, for example bonded pairs, one at regular fee, 2nd one free (2 for 1),
  • Elderly or under socialized animals ½ the regular price.
  • Animals with on-going health issues (depending on the extent of the health issues) by donation
  • Foster family pays ½ of the regular price.

Kittens or puppies under 6 months of age are by donation plus a deposit to put towards spay or neuter. This is to be paid at the time of adoption.

Your donation includes a wellness check donated by the HG Animal Hospital. GAHS covers the cost of treatment for internal or external parasites, the 1st core vaccine and any medical treatment needed at the time.

The prepay spay neuter deposit is:

  • Female or male puppy under 6 months $350.00
  • Female kitten under 6 months $350.00

If two kittens or puppies are adopted at the same time the adopter may choose to pay ½ the regular deposit for each one.

As the adopter you are responsible for any remaining cost of the surgery, the booster vaccination and ID tattoo. We will give you a certificate for the amount you paid for your deposit. Bring it with you when you take your companion animal to the clinic to be fixed. The amount you prepaid is subtracted from your final bill. You pay any balance owed directly to the clinic.
