what we do
Gwaii Animal Helpline
The Gwaii Animal Helpline Society (GAHS) is a BC registered non profit society located on Haida Gwaii, which is the unceded territory of the Haida Nation. We are solely volunteer run. Our primary mandate is to support and encourage humane treatment of abandoned, surrendered, injured, or neglected companion animals who need human assistance.
History
Many years ago, a few Taaw Tlldawee (Masset) residents, who were concerned about animal wellbeing on Haida Gwaii, formed a group to try to address some of the issues in their community. At about the same time, concerned residents in Daajing Giids (Village of Queen Charlotte) established the Haida Gwaii branch of the BC SPCA to address similar concerns.
Fast-forward 35 years, the Gwaii Animal Helpline Society was incorporated in 2021 to serve the needs of all Haida Gwaii communities.
Our Approach
Our preferred approach is to provide support to current guardians who are struggling to care for their companion animal(s) in order to improve the life of both guardian and companion animal. Support comes in the form of guidance, information sharing, referrals, and/or special financial assistance programs. If none of these options are viable, adoption is the next best outcome for companion animals who cannot remain or be returned to their original guardians.
It's okay to surrender.
One of the most challenging situations that some guardians encounter is when life circumstances change and you can no longer care for your companion animal. We understand this is an extremely stressful and emotional situation. Our hope is that if you need to surrender your animal, you can trust us to match your companion to a new loving home.
